The Speed of Swell

How fast does the swell travel?

Swell in deep water moves way faster than most people think. As a simple rule, the speed of a swell is about 1.5 times its period, which means a 20-second swell is cruising at around 30 knots.

But here’s the twist: the actual waves traveling within that swell band are going even quicker — roughly 3× the period — so that same 20-second swell can have individual waves flying along at up to 60 knots.

These waves aren’t just sitting still inside the set either — they’re cycling. A wave will push its way to the front, slow down as it reaches the lead edge, drift back through the pack, then move forward again. It’s like the whole swell is breathing… one long inhale and exhale across the ocean.

The easiest way to picture it is like this: imagine a conveyor belt spinning at 30mph, except that the entire conveyor belt is bolted to the back of a truck that’s driving forward at 30mph. If you stick something on that belt — boom — it’s now moving a combined speed of 60mph.

Pretty wild, right? Swell physics might sound like math at first… but once it clicks, you’ll never look at the ocean the same again.
